How to Get Rid of Bathroom Mildew

7/19/2019 (Permalink)

To mildew-clean a bathroom can be challenging, but it is not impossible by any means.

Bathroom mildew is a very common problem in Edmond, OK, and elsewhere because all that is needed to produce it is a moist environment. The good news is that a little know-how and elbow grease can take care of a mildew problem, and there is comfort in knowing that there are professionals who can mildew clean if things become serious.

Dealing With Existing Mildew Problems

There are many responses to bathroom mold, depending on where it has taken hold. Some materials can be cleaned, while others will require replacement.

  • A solution of one part bleach to two parts water and a scrub brush can remove mildew from nonporous materials such as glazed tile and porcelain commonly found in toilets, sinks, and bathtubs.
  • Shower curtain liners and shower curtains can be laundered with color safe bleach and rehung once completely dry.
  • Grout and caulking affected by mildew will require replacement because of their porousness.
  • Mildewed areas of drywall are impossible to mildew clean and will require cutting away the affected area and replacing it.
  • Carpet and padding in a bathroom will require removal and replacement once mildew has taken hold.

Heading Off Future Mildew Problems

Mildew thrives on moisture and substances it can digest. The key to preventing this relentless microscopic organism from gaining traction is to keep surfaces as clean and dry as possible. Installing a bathroom fan will go a long way toward helping to prevent moisture from collecting. Allowing fresh air to circulate from a window can also be helpful, as can running a small dehumidifier. Experts say that a humidity level below 45% is optimal. Painting surfaces with paint containing mildewcide is a great preemptive strategy.

To mildew-clean a bathroom can be challenging, but it is not impossible by any means. Keeping things fresh and mildew-free requires the kind of everyday vigilance that any property owner knows comes with the territory.
